LHS today announced a temporary restriction that prohibits visitors under the age of 18, as well as those who are ill, from visiting any area of the health system. The restriction includes both the Lakeside Memorial Hospital and Beikirch Care Center. The restriction was put in place to protect potentially vulnerable patients and infants from the spread of the H1N1 virus, which is rapidly increasing in the Rochester area, most prevalently among the younger population.
There has been an increase in influenza cases over the past week, most of which have been in children and adolescents. As H1N1 is a community-wide issue, and particularly prevalent among younger people, we feel strongly that the restrictions will help us better ensure the health and safety of our most vulnerable patient population – as well as our staff who serve them. We will continue to monitor the situation - in collaboration with officials from other area hospitals - and will re-evaluate visitor policies on an ongoing basis.
